When you think of tomatoes, goji berries, and eggplant, you may be thinking of some of your favorite, and nutritious foods.
For instance, tomatoes are believed to reduce the risk of prostate cancer and contain an enormous amount of Potassium, Calcium, and Vitamins A and C.
Eggplants have plenty of vitamins C and B-6, potassium, and fiber. They are known to help lower cholesterol and maintain a healthy heart.
So it would possibly shock you to know that these foods can cause premature aging and other health issues as well!
Yes, these foods are a part of the nightshade vegetables. Let’s take a look at how these healthy foods can actually be your enemy.
What Are Nightshade Vegetables?
These vegetables are a part of the Solanaceae plant species. As there are over 2,000 of these plants, here in the United States, there are a select few we come into contact with the most.
Our favorite foods (fruits and vegetables) such as white potatoes, tomatoes, eggplants, peppers, and paprika are some of the most widely consumed nightshade vegetables around. Other fruits and veggies include:
- Goji berries
- Cape gooseberries
- Ground cherries
- Garden huckleberries
Potential Issues You May Have with Nightshade Vegetables
So how on earth could these tasty and healthy foods be bad for you? Well, they are known to cause arthritis, muscle spasms, and lead to soft tissues.
The reason these can occur is because these fruits and vegetables contain small traces of a substance called solanine (a steroid alkaloid), as well as capsaicin and nicotine.
These drugs are known to cause stiffness and inflammation in the body and joints if taken in too high increments.
As far as the soft tissues, too much vitamin D3 can cause calcinosis that is a condition of too much calcium deposits built up in the skin. This is associated a lot with various autoimmune diseases.
You Can Be Addicted to These Foods!
As mentioned above, most of your ailments are when taking too high of an increment of these nightshades. If you pay attention to the particular foods they are, it’s not hard to consume too much on a daily basis.
Think about how we as Americans eat, especially when it comes to fast food. You crave hamburgers, French fries loaded with ketchup, and pizza.
Well, hamburgers have your tomatoes. However, the cheese on them and meat makes you crave something to balance it out: potatoes!
Then there are the French fries that need ketchup (tomatoes), and your pizza has plenty of sauce which also is tomatoes.
Now, as mentioned, you’ll find drug-like substances, which, of course, can be addicting. They include three other addicting alkaloids: tropane, pyrrolizidine, and indole.
Now, it’s not required to cut all nightshade vegetables from your diet if you’re in pretty good health.
You’d, of course, be suffering from the lack of antioxidants, vitamins, and minerals that your body needs. However, be aware of your intake.
If you are unsure if your body is allergic to these foods, simply cut them from your diet for a week and see if you notice an improvement in your overall health.
