Buying and eating organic and non-genetically modified (GMO) foods has become popular over the years. And there’s a good reason for that. Chemicals in your foods aren’t just bad for your health, it’s scary.
Now, while chemicals in your food are getting a lot of attention, the chemicals in hair care products are being overlooked. But these chemicals are just as scary as the others!
And, since your skin is the largest organ in or on the body, it’s pretty important to know what it’s absorbing.
The Dangers of Sodium in Your Hair Care Products
Shampoos have dozens of chemicals in them that have adverse side effects. For example, sodium or ammonium Laureth Sulfates are found in almost every shampoo on the market. The bad part is that both chemicals have ingredients that promote cancer.
While this may not seem like a huge problem, when you consider how often you shampoo your hair over the course of your life and how much your body absorbs in that time, you might start to get worried.
Behentrimonium chloride is a salt that is used in most hair care products such as shampoos, conditioners, hairspray, and mousse. It’s used to kill bacteria. For those with sensitive scalps or thin hair, this might be an aggressive chemical to use in products.
It could cause rashes and breakage. If you’ve experienced this from your hair care products, you might want to look into products that don’t contain this chemical.
The Dangers of Glycol
Sodium and Ammonium Laureth sulfates aren’t the only dangerous, cancer-causing chemicals in shampoos. Glycol, which sounds close to glycerin, is found under several different names on the ingredients list. It’s often called PEG, or polyethylene glycol.
Sure, it’s odorless and colorless, however, just like sulfates, this is also a carcinogen. In fact, this ingredient is found in de-icing solutions, antifreeze, and brake fluid. Do you really want this in your hair?
The Dangers of Polysorbates
Another sinister chemical that’s found in most conditioners is polysorbates. This chemical is used to keep the strong fragrance of your conditioners lasting after you’ve washed your hair.
Unfortunately, the chemical leaves behind small deposits on the skin, which can irritate the skin. Polysorbates will mess with the natural chemical levels on the skin and destroy the scalps ability to protect itself, which may lead to more damaged hair.
The Dangers of Amodimethicone
Everyone loves how smooth conditioner leaves the hair feeling. If you’ve ever wondered what gives your hair that silky feeling, it’s a chemical called amodimethicone. While not particularly a poison, this chemical can weaken and destroy healthy hair.
Think of it like a sealant. You can put it on your hair to protect it from other chemicals and even heat, but that means other nutrients are being kept out. This can cause breakage and thinning hair.
It can be scary not knowing what chemicals are in the products you use in your hair. However, if you do your research and are extremely careful, you can avoid being poisoned by your hair care products. Organic products are of course more expensive, but they are so much better for your hair.
Keep in mind of the ingredients listed above as what to watch out for in products even listed as all natural or organic. They may dry your scalp, irritate your hair, and lead to hair loss.
